You have probably heard the argument from a co-worker or friend that the Bible is simply an ancient piece of literature that holds little to no water in the twenty-first century. Fortunately, that could not be further from the truth.

For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires.
Hebrews 4:12

The Bible is alive, relevant, and yes, it matters to your life. Here’s why:

1. The Bible can help you in every decision you make.

While you may have made a decision to follow Jesus, that is definitely not all there is to it. Honoring and following God with your whole life is the filter that you should be making all of your decisions through.

The very essence of your words is truth; all your just regulations will stand forever.
Psalm 119:160

We can have confidence in the fact that the Bible is God’s Word and that there is wisdom to gain from it that applies to every area of life. It is one of the many tools we have to help guide our steps as Christians.

The Bible always points us to Christ and aligns us with His purposes, so it’s relevant for every decision we make.

2. The Bible is the best way to grow closer to God.

We talk about it all the time, but S.O.A.P. has the power to transform everything about your life by growing and strengthening your relationship with God. If you have no idea what S.O.A.P. is, read more about it here.

The essence of what it means to be a Christian is that we have a growing, continuing relationship with God through Jesus. This relationship is strengthened by reading the Bible because it connects us with God’s heart.

The purpose of the Bible is to tell the story of God connecting with humanity and to point us to Jesus. The words of Scripture are there for us to know God’s heart, to develop a thriving connection with Christ, to hear His voice clearly, and to follow Him more closely.

3. The Bible is a weapon to fight sin.

Temptation and sin are powerful and deadly, and they want so desperately to destroy us. And the only way to fight against it is through the Bible.

The Bible is often described as a sword that God gives us to fight battles against sin and evil. By reading God’s Word and listening for His voice, we fight back against the sin that aims to kill us.

Read the Bible, not because you should, but because God provides it as a way for us to know Him better and live following Him. Spend time talking with God and listening for His voice; He still speaks! You will not regret allowing the Bible to shape your decisions.
